Jersey Shore advice
Hey guys, I'm wondering if some of you could help me pick a Jersey Shore beach to go to in July (providing the summer ever decides to kick in).

I'm trying to plan a weekend at the shore with some friends. We're ages 26-33, and we're just looking for some nice beach time and fun boardwalk time. We'll need to stay in an area with motels or other budget-friendly options, as we can't afford anything more than $200/night.

I used to go to Wildwood back in high school/college, but now I worry the crowd might be TOO young for us--we don't want to be overwhelmed with drunk teenagers. But, we also don't want something too quiet or children-oriented as we'll want to be around others our age and be able to do some boardwalk drinking/wandering. Not looking for MTV-bouttie-shaking, just some relaxed/relaxing fun.

Any suggestions? Do you think Wildwood is still the right place or am I right about the under-25 invasion? Thanks a lot!

If you live in South jersey, you odds are almost twice as great that you've been an alien aubductee
A few days ago, the Weird Universe blog dug up a 1993 report on a UFO abduction survey, investigated by sociology professor Ted Goertzel at Rutgers University. The report was checking into a previous study's claim that 3.7 million Americans were suffering from "UFO abduction syndrome." While the Goertzel report largely debunked the idea that millions of Americans are actual abductees, you might still be in some danger — especially if you live in South Jersey.

NJ politicians again make the case that they should be the NJ Giants
Look we're all proud of the Giants but can we please get over the fact that they call themselves the NY Giants? They play in Rutherford which is a 10 minute commute from Manhatten and they are considered the local team of both NJians, Nyers, as well as some folks from Ct and even parts of PA. The Buffalo Bills don't actually play in Buffalo, they play in Orchard Park, NY and are refered to as the Buffalo Bills because that is the nearest metropolitan city to their stadium.

Ok, so because it says NY, that confers NY state as well as NYC, fine. Who gives a rats ass? We've got a budget deficit from hell, roads that need paving, so many ethic problems that the rat is our unofficial state animal, so can we stop crying that "we're being snubbed"? Please? This is not something to get in a twist about. Seriously folks. Can we get back to more important things, like the fact that McGreevey's gay lover is loaning him money to cover his legal fees but not to help him pay his alimony?

Priorities people, please!

the mythbusters should tackle this I think
Last year a young pitcher got hit by a ball that came back at him off an aluminum bat. The boy is still severely injured and now bhis parents announced the inevitable lawsuit against everybody from the bat manufacturer to the sxports authority. Thei suit is based on studies that show that balls come off aluminum bats much faster, and that the associated safety risks were never disclosed. If this ball had come off a wooden bat the kid wouldn't have been injured as severely.

Now, lawsuit aside (I don't want to have this degenerate into a yes they should-no they shouldn't sue) discussion--well unless it's civil) I am curious about these studies. There was a graphic which isn't included in the online version, but several facts were stated...

They claim that scientific tests consistently show that balls hit with modern aluminum bats travel at speeds faster than 100 mph. A ball batted with a wooden bat typically travels at speeds less than 100 mph, the family claims. Fronzuto estimated that a baseball hit with an aluminum bat typically travels about 15 percent to 25 percent faster than one struck with a wooden bat. Also... Fronzuto said comparing today's aluminum bats to those of 30 years ago "is like comparing a match to a blowtorch."

So there's research which backs up the fact that balls travel faster. But if you're hit by a baseball at 83 MPH will that translate into less injury then one hit at 95 mph? I think it's time for the MB to break out grant's samauri sword boy and rig it to hit baseballs. Have it test wooden an aluminum bats from both the 70's as well as today to get a baseline of what kind of speeds these bats produce.

Then do some ballistic gel studies or use an analog and see how much more damaging 95 is vs 83.

It should also be noted that this type of injury is a total freak injury to begin with. It's rare and unlikely, but I'd be curious to see how much more dangerous one is vs the other.

avoid the Dark Knight at Great Adventure
I have been a season pass owner at Great Adventure for at least 50-6 years now. I used to be able to go from park opening till close, but honestly I must be getting older because those days are long gone. I guess at some point I had to turn into my father and begin checking my watch around 430. I have a 3 park pass and I primarily have it for the water park, since my 9 year old son is still not into coaster yet. if he were, then it the theme park would be more of a draw.

We went down to GA yesterday to pick up our passes and were pleasantly surprised to see that the Dark Knight coaster was running. I know the new Batman movie doesn't come out till mid July, and I thought the coaster wasn't running until closer to the movie premiere. We found a number of things about the park that the word "disapointing" can't fully convey.

Season tickets are processed near their 3-D ride which last year was a Spongebob Squarepants ride. This year it's 3-D trip to the Moon, which is about some bugs who stow away about a lunar bound nasa space flight. First off the story was very short, and very lame. That aside, the 3-D ddn't work. you saw double images 92% of the movie. I thought maybe it was me or perhaps where we were sitting, and a quick Q&A with some other guests confirmed that everyone had the same problem.

Our second problem was with the guards. They were needlessly aggresive and rude thruout. . I was driving thru the handicapped parking section when a guard stopped me and asked what I was doing. !!!! "Parking" I said wth a touch of confusion. he was polite but it seemed an absurd question. One man was (apparently) ejected by 10 security guards for smoking My wife was screamed at because she was standing pst the blue line which designated the end of the smoking area. The guard at the Dark Knight was screaming at people in line he would throw them out if he caught them sitting on the rails. The guards there need to learn that a polite request is usually enough. If you need to address a crowd, there's a difference between speaking loud enough to be heard over the dinn of the park, and screaming in a nasty voice.

Something also occurred to me. El Toro is the highest and fast wood coaster in the world and it sits next to what i think is the oldest coaster in the park: Rolling Thunder. Why would you need two wooden coasters side by side, especially when one is brand new and one is an aging dinosaur? The answer is you don't. I strongly suspect that Rolling Thunder will be gone within 2-3 years. It takes up a lot of real estate and it's not a big draw any more...
The most disapointing thing about the visit was the Dark Knight coasterCollapse )

NJ man tries to cash forged lottery ticket. News flash: no one believed him, he was arrested
An Elizabeth man was arrested after trying to cash a forged scratch off lottery ticket which would've had been worth $7,000 if it had been legit. After trying in vain to cash it at local merchants he tried to cash it at the NJ Lottery Commision who decided enough is enough and had him arrested.
